Participatory Ageing
Workshop
on the Frontiers of Research in Longevity Medicine
:
This workshop was held on the 24th and 25th
of August, 2004 in Pune in collaboration with the Government
of India, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the
Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Government
of India. The meeting aimed at bringing together on one forum
the status and trend of research going on in science related
to the mental and physical health of the elderly. The subjects
covered ranged from biology of ageing to all health issues
of ageing, both in modern medicine and the traditional Indian
system of Ayurveda. It was inaugurated by Dr. R. A. Mashelkar,
Director-General, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research,
Government of India and was attended by eminent national and
international scientists and social scientists. A book on
the scientific papers presented at the meeting has also been
published.

Workshop on Participatory
Ageing :
It was organized by HelpAge India, Delhi, with a view to
enable the young olds to contribute their time, energy and experience
for developmental purpose and to foster a sense of belonging among
the senior citizens. The workshop was chaired by Smt. Asha Das, IAS,
former Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government
of India. Dr. S.D. Gokhale, President, ILC-I delivered the keynote
address.
Seminar on Minimum
Standards for Old Age Homes :
This seminar was held jointly with YASHADA on October 5th
and 6th 2004, with financial support from the Government
of India, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The
main objective of the meeting was to discuss the minimum standards
for amenities and services to be provided in the old age homes
as prescribed by the Government of India, their adequacy and
relevance considering the constraints under which the old
age homes function. Representatives from 20 old age homes
as also officials and experts from the government attended
the meet.

Symposium on
Alternative Systems of Medicine :
Along with modern medicine, it is necessary to understand
the traditional knowledge of diagnosis and treatment, the
recent trends in research and drug development under these
systems and future prospects. With this objective, a symposium
on ‘Asian Traditional Medicine and Longevity’
was organized by ILC-I on January 30 and 31, 2005. Lead speakers
at the symposium were Dr. Waltraud Ernst, President, IASTAM
International, Prof. Jay Olshansky, Professor, School of Public
Health, University of Illinois, Chicago, USA, and Dr. S.D.
Gokhale, President, ILC-I. The participants included many
national and international experts in both modern and traditional
systems of medicine.
Workshop on Volunteers’ Bureau
of Senior Citizens :
The prime objective of this workshop held on March 22 and
23, 2005, was to showcase the model Bureau of the ILC-I and also to discuss
the experience of participating NGOs from the western and southern regions
in promoting participatory ageing and help identify the best practices
in this regard. This workshop was supported by the National Institute
of Social Defence, Government of India, Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment. Representatives of senior citizens’ organizations
and other NGOs presented their experiences and the work done by them.
It was also an occasion to honour seven leading senior volunteers from
Pune who have been offering their services for the last few decades in
fields like age care, blood and organ donation, performing last rites
of the deceased destitute old persons, etc. A similar workshop will be
held in Delhi to cover the northern and eastern regions.
